Mexican Red Wood Turtle , one of the four subspecies of tropical wood turtles, are largely terrestrial but often found near water, which they readily enter. Native to the Pacific lowlands of Mexico, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, this beautiful species is facing serious threats from habitat destruction and road kills as land is developed and new roads are constructed.
Their shells can vary in many shades of brown, adorned with large yellow or red circular patterns. The plastrons (bellies) are a striking yellow/gold with black and red markings, and their vividly colored skin appears as if painted by a makeup artist.
Highly intelligent, Mexican Red Wood Turtles make outstanding pets. Typically reaching only 6 to 7 inches in size, several juveniles can be kept together in a medium-sized tank. Several adults will thrive in a small, protected, well-set-up outdoor pen in warm temperatures and in a medium-sized indoor tank or habitat during colder temperatures.
True omnivores, they favor fruits and vegetables but also consume worms, insects, snails, and other protein foods. Mexican Red Wood Turtles come in a wide range of colors, but all share the same “painted” limbs and faces. Each has a distinct personality that brings joy to their keepers time and again.
